Hi, I'm Joan Duatis
I'm 69 years old. I'm from Barcelona, an architect by trade, and a computer programmer. I got into magic in 2019. It all started when I performed "The Inn" trick for my granddaughter, who was four at the time.
She loved it so much that I told myself I had to learn more tricks to perform for her. That's how I found Julio Ribera on YouTube and started practicing other effects like "Out of This World." When I did it for my granddaughter, she truly believed I'd given her magical powers to guess all the card colors.
Now I have two more grandchildren. The youngest one is amazed by the three ropes trick, where three ropes of different lengths become three equal ones.
It's because of them that, despite my age, I keep learning. Because I figure by the time they're 8, 9, or 10, I'll have perfected my moves even more to blow their minds even further.

Thanks a lot, José Luis, for your comments. You're absolutely right; it must be tough to do card magic for kids under 13.
As for the Innkeeper effect, I think it worked for me because I presented it as a story, and instead of talking about Kings, Queens, Princes, and Servants, I talked about gentlemen, ladies, girls, and boys.
The Out of This World effect has the advantage that the child only has to distinguish between red and black cards (they don't know suits like spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds yet). When I performed it for my granddaughter, I was alone with her. I think that also makes a difference. Plus, her parents had sent her to her room to think things over, and I took advantage of that to do this trick for her.
Another thing that works well for me is personalizing the trick with them. For example, in Triumph, I use some magic words that include the names of my three grandchildren (for example, in Catalan: "Rai, Oscar i Ona aquesta mágia és bona" or "Oscar Ona y Rai això no falla mai").
All that's regarding card magic. As for the three rope routine, it's a perfect fit for me that the longest rope corresponds to my oldest granddaughter, the medium rope to my middle grandson, and the smallest rope to the "little one," and that's how I explain it to them.
I admit that besides my grandchildren, I haven't done kids' magic for anyone else. So maybe these tips are too specific. But perhaps they'll be useful to someone else. That's why I'm sharing my little bit of experience.
Magical regards
@Joan Duatis Colomé:
That's generally what people say... 😊, and for me, it's definitely a challenge! 😅
@Joan Duatis Colomé:
A good presentation tailored to the audience, just as it should be 😊.
@Joan Duatis Colomé:
The Oil and Water effect is usually a hit too; my 7-year-old daughter really liked it.
My story for her? Simple: the cards are family, and no matter how much you try to separate them, they always end up together.
I use Spades and Hearts, and the Ace, Two, and Three of both suits.

I think you really put a lot of thought into your work.
@Joan Duatis Colomé:
It all starts somewhere 😊, slowly but surely.
@Joan Duatis Colomé:
All advice is valuable, especially when it's based on personal experience (you've already given me some ideas 😊), so thanks for sharing!!!
All the best and happy magic!!!
Hey there, Joan, and welcome!
Just a thought: Performing magic for kids under 10-11 or 12 (depends on the individual child), especially card magic, is usually "Mission Impossible."
If you can get them to pay attention, focus, and follow along, and then understand what happened as something magical (specifically card tricks), I'd say you're a genius!
As a general rule, doing card magic for kids under 13 and having them follow along is usually tough, if not impossible (at least for me).
All the best, and happy magic!
Yep, I think so!
Now it's a multicultural chat.
Cheers
Hi @MacAvi!!
Great to have you here.
I love that you do magic for your grandkids; you're doing a fantastic job!
Keep sharing your resources; I'm sure they'll be helpful to a lot of people.
You can post this in the #magic and #beginners categories.
Thanks, and keep it up!!
Is the message in Catalan??
The Magician's Assistant clearly figured out I'm a Catalan speaker and went out of their way to communicate in Catalan to make me feel right at home... and it worked!
Thank you so much.
