How to Choose Magic Tricks for Kids? (According to Martin Gardner)
In the book Close-Up Magic by Martin Gardner, right on page 163, he shares a selection of magic tricks for kids.
First, he reveals his three ingredients for choosing a good magic trick for kids:
Something simple, easy to understand, and very impressive.
Let's dive in.
Here's his personal selection:
The Vanishing Coin: A surprising trick where a coin vanishes, only to seemingly fall from 'heaven' right into the palm of your hand.
The Thumb Sever: A classic among kids, where you seemingly pull off your thumb and restore it.
The Sticking Knife (can be done with a wand, pencil, pen, or ruler). The beauty of this trick is that you can reveal the secret at the end and wait for them to want to show it to their friends.
"Swallowing" a Knife
The Vanishing Salt Shaker: “I usually place the salt shaker on a coin and announce the coin's disappearance.”
Tricks with paddle moves and their dots. And the false turn that creates the illusion.
The 'Cootie Catcher' or 'Fortune Teller'…
Grapes or coins through the head. Tamariz has his version, 'Olives Eaten by the Head,' in his book Magic at the Bar.
The Knife Through the Table (or the glass)
The Jumping Mouse (that little critter that seems to move on its own)
