Standard Thumb Tips usually run about $3-$4.
Alan Wong's, for example, are just a bit more.
And the realistic, high-definition Alan Wong ones, with skin texture and nail details, might set you back around $5 or $6.
That's not a huge expense for a quality prop.
That said, I've read/heard somewhere that back in the day, Thumb Tips were carved from wood. And I doubt they were as perfect and detailed as the ones we have today.
So, if the wooden ones worked perfectly fine back then,
I'd imagine (and this is just my opinion) that with some skill,
a Thumb Tip from a kid's magic kit, used correctly, should be perfectly adequate.
Cheers!!!
I used to have a 100-trick magic set; it was really cheesy, the tricks were bad, and half the stuff didn't even work. It also came with a Thumb Tip that was nine times the size of my actual thumb! Honestly, you're better off with just a deck of cards and some sleight of hand (and sometimes, just the deck!) to amaze people.
From what I recall, the thumb tips in kids' magic kits were always pretty cheap and unrealistic. You're definitely much better off picking up a separate one.
Cheers!
