Palm

Hey everyone! Ace here.

I'd like to learn more about the art of palming. If anyone knows where I should start, I'd really appreciate it, as I'm not sure where to begin.

I've seen a lot of content in courses, books, and online, but I'm not sure which ones are truly valuable, as some are pretty basic. I'd like something that will genuinely help me understand and improve this art.

On "Youtube," I've seen several videos about palming, but they might be too basic.

There's a lot on the topic in "ninja de la magia," but I'm not sure if a "book" would be better.

If anyone knows the best option, or can recommend a course and/or book that's genuinely good at covering this aspect for someone to start practicing this art, I'd be really grateful.

Hey Ace,

as they say in books like Canuto or Giobbi's GEC, palms are very well explained, with different types. There are also quite a few explained in great detail in Técnica cartomágica avanzada.

I get that it's a technique we sometimes need to see, because it seems impossible for it not to be obvious, so watching an explanatory video or something similar is really helpful.

You can find a lot on YouTube, but you have to be careful because sometimes they don't explain things well. Compare what they say with what you've read in books. There are also specific courses or workshops. Miguel Gómez gave one at El Chop Cup in Madrid, @Ricardo has a course on his platform, and @maximiliano recently gave a masterclass on the topic that's also available on his platform.

And then, it's good to find a routine that helps you loosen up. I did it with a transposition I read ages ago in Misdirection, where you had two identical cards on top, and when you asked the spectator to leave their card there, you palmed the top card, and then set it down. You did a Double Lift to show their card again, and gave it back to them to put away. Then you did another Double Lift and showed the duplicate (which was going to be your card), undid the Double Lift, took the top card (the spectator's), and by rubbing that card with their hands, you showed that the one in your hand was now theirs, and they checked that yours was in their hands. It played really well (though I stopped doing it because asking for the card, putting it in the deck, and then giving it back didn't seem logical to me. Now, I do something similar with Darwin Ortiz's 'The Curse of Nulda').

Besides what's already been said, I'll add a few more resources:

  • The Art of Palming by Javi Benítez, which won him Fool Us. A brilliant, super well-explained video course.
  • Now You See It, Now You Don't by Bill Tarr, a 1976 book you can probably find as a PDF.
  • If an Octopus Could Palm by David Buck, from 2011, also easy to find.
  • Topping the Deck: The Perfect Move by Jamy Ian Swiss, a booklet released last year by Vanishing Inc from the master of masters. Jamy Ian Swiss is essentially the Anglo-Saxon Tamariz.

Hopefully, these help you properly learn the card palm, and not that junk you see out there on YouTube.

The foundational card magic book has many palming techniques; I highly recommend it.
