You have the option to buy it or make it yourself; it all depends on how you plan to use it.
If you're going to buy it just to have it collect dust in a drawer, then you're better off making it yourself.
If you don't know how it works and your intention is to use it for shows or gigs, it's better to buy one first to understand the mechanism, and then you can make your own.
