The 'Explanation' That's Actually Another Trick

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for an effect to close out a small show I'm doing for my friends on New Year's Eve. Nothing too fancy, just some intermediate card magic.

The kind of effect I'm after is the classic one where, after you finish it, you tell them you're going to explain how you did it, but while you're explaining, you're actually performing an even more spectacular one.

It would be similar to the Changing Dot effect – you do a trick, explain it, and it turns out you're actually doing another trick they can't explain, but with cards.

Anyway, I hope someone can help me out.

Thanks, and much magic to you all!

Hey Ezequiel,

I was familiar with a trick where a Rubik's Cube travels from one box to another. It actually works in a very simple way. The idea is that the Rubik's Cube is initially handed out for examination, and then you say you're going to show the trick in slow motion so they can see how it's done. At that moment, you slowly put the cube into box A, then slowly take it out and slowly put it into box B. If there are kids watching, they'll tell you it's impossible, that it can't be done that fast for them to see. And you say, "You don't believe it? Well, I'm going to do it!" You then pick up the cube from box B, but this isn't the examined cube. It's another one that only has three sides; the other sides of the cube don't exist. So you only show the three existing sides, and leaving the examined cube in box B, you put the three-sided cube into box A. If the box is the same size as the cube, it will appear to have vanished, and obviously, the examined cube is still in box B.

You can do the same thing with a card. You force a duplicate card that's in box B (let's assume it's the Two of Spades) and say you're doing it in slow motion. You place it in box B and say: "This is what it looks like in slow motion. Want to see it at normal speed?" They'll say yes, and then you grab the duplicate card and use any card vanish. You could even use a vanish where the card needs a gimmick; you can swap the gimmicked card for the other, so there's no problem. Then, when you vanish the card, the duplicate will be in box B, and that's it.

I hope my explanation makes sense. If not, please tell me, and I'd really appreciate it.

Alright, and good magic!

Thanks a lot for the reply. That made perfect sense, and it's a great idea. Explaining a trick in slow motion makes it seem obvious, yet simultaneously impossible to figure out, and then you really nail them with an even more spectacular effect.

This might not be exactly what you had in mind, but perhaps it'll be useful.

I usually perform Dai Vernon's Triumph, and at the end, I explain that the cards have all magically turned face down on their own because they're actually magnets, and opposite poles (like back-to-back) repel each other.

Then, I tell them that if they don't believe me, they should pay attention to what I do next: I show the top card (for example, a 7 of Clubs), which is actually the second card shown with a Double Lift. I place both cards back face down and pass a real magnet along the side of the card. Then, I turn over this time the actual top card, and you see the 7 of Clubs shifted towards the side where I passed the magnet (obviously, you'll need one of the Bicycle gaff decks, which include cards like this one and others with really cool effects that allow for the creation of many tricks and routines).

I'm not sure if something like this helps, but if I think of anything else, I'll let you know! 🙂

All the best!

It really ties in perfectly. Give a false premise for an effect that they'll find hard to swallow, and then, when you wrap up, you hit them with a killer effect, like using a mangled card. Very strong.

It sounds like it could be a magic trick by inmagic that goes like this:

You have them pick a card, and you find it using a Key Card. Then you put the deck back in the tuck case and tell them what their card is. Next, you tell them you're going to show them how you do it. You have them choose a card and put it on the bottom of the deck, then you put the deck back in the case. You explain that magicians divine cards thanks to the card case (at this point, you draw a door on it). You open the "door," and the bottom card is revealed, then you erase it.

Got it, I'll see if I can find the video and send it over.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

This is the video Josias was talking about:

I don't know how it's done, but it definitely looks like a gimmick you buy.

Bye

The best trick is the one where the handkerchief turns into an egg.
