Magic for an "Event"

I've got a problem, let me give you some context. November 9th is the presentation for my basketball club, and the organizers asked me if I'd be up for doing some magic – basically, drawing a crowd and performing. The issue is, I have no idea what tricks I can do. Between players and parents, we're talking about 400 people, so I'm really stuck on what to perform.

I really want to do this, because as a magician, it's a huge step to perform for so many people. But my problem is I just don't know what to do. Plus, it's in an arena, so I can't really set up for a full-blown show. It'd have to be card tricks or something simple.

If anyone knows of any gimmicks, courses, tricks, or anything like that, please let me know! I'm even open to paid resources.

For now, @paumedvaz, I'd suggest checking out all the videos at this link. You might find enough there to put together a show that's just right for you and your goals.

@paumedvaz:

On November 9th is my basketball club's presentation, and the organizers asked if I'd be able to do some magic—meaning, get an audience involved and perform magic.

So...in just 23 days...

@paumedvaz:

The problem is, I don't know what effects I can perform, since between players and parents, there will be about 400 of us, so I don't know what effects to do.

You don't have one problem; from my perspective, you have several.

    • How long have you been performing magic?
    • If you've been performing for more than 6 months, who have you performed for? Family, friends, colleagues, or strangers?
    • Saying "I don't know what tricks I can do" (and repeating it) raises a red flag for me and makes me question your self-confidence a bit.

@paumedvaz:

I want to do it because, as a magician, performing for that many people is a huge step, but the problem I have is that I don't know what to do.

If you don't know what to do, it means your repertoire is pretty small.

And while I don't want to jinx it or discourage you, if your repertoire is small, I'm not sure you'll have enough time in 23 days to properly prepare something, especially if you're going to be performing for about 400 people (if you've never performed for such a large audience before).

@paumedvaz:

Also, it's in a hall, meaning I can't set it up like a full show. It would have to be card tricks or something simple.

I don't understand this part...

So, because it's in a hall, you can't prepare it like a show???

Then, how do you want to prepare it??????????????

@paumedvaz:

If anyone knows about gimmicks, courses, effects, or anything, please let me know. I don't care if there are paid resources.

Regardless of whether you want to arm yourself to the teeth with gimmicks and effects (that's your call), and unless you can give us new details about "what you can do and what you can't"..., my advice is this:

If you don't have a solid 15-20-25 minute show that you've been performing for at least 3 months, don't try to learn new things in such a short amount of time, and don't accept the gig.

Alright, I'll try to answer everything.

I've performed magic for audiences before, both street magic and for large groups, but never a formal show. When I said I didn't know what effects to do, I phrased that poorly, because I'm confident in many of the effects I know; I've got them practically perfected. What I was referring to was if someone could suggest or recommend some effects to perform in a show.

The reason I can't prepare it like a full show is that I've been told to keep it more spontaneous. They want me to pull two or three people from the audience and perform for them. So, I've already thought of some effects today. Yesterday, when I posted that, I was super nervous 😂

And regarding gimmicks, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good one. I don't want to overuse them, just one.

And finally, thanks a lot for the advice, but like I said, I can't really do a "show" per se. It needs to be more intimate, for just a couple or three people.

In conclusion, thanks so much for the tips; as a beginner magician, they're super helpful. But yeah, today I've already thought of some effects I know, so I'll practice them a ton and take the opportunity to go to Barcelona and perform them for people to build my confidence.

Thanks again for all the advice
