Kids' Magic

Hey everyone, I've been following Julio and his courses for a bit now, and I'm really itching to get into kids' magic—performing for children, that is. Do you know the best way to get started? Are there any good courses, classes, or videos you'd recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Hey there, @Mangorolo29! Kid show magic is extremely complex and specific; it's a discipline all its own and has nothing to do with adult magic, close-up, or even the effects you might personally enjoy most. It's all about playing with reactions, stories, and contrasts. It's a world unto itself; it's not as simple as throwing confetti or giving out balloons.

If you really want to get into kid show magic, here are a few resources:

  • Danny Orleans has three DVDs that are the ultimate guide. They're called Danny Orleans - The Art of Presenting Magic to Children, Vol 1, 2, and 3. You'll find EVERYTHING in them – 40 years of kid show magic knowledge.
  • David Kaye (Silly Billy)'s book Serio de Remate is also very comprehensive.
  • For balloon twisting, straight talk: the best book is Willy Monroe's Don globo...: o la forma del aire. There's a three-level video course taught by Willy Monroe, but it's on a different magic platform. It's basically the same content as the book.
  • Joshua Jay's book Magia grande para manos pequeñas (Big Magic for Little Hands) I believe is magic performed by children, not for children, but it might still be worth a look; I'm sure there are some ideas in there.

Everything is relatively easy to find and/or buy, and except for Danny Orleans' DVDs (which are the most important), everything else is in Spanish. Another option is to search YouTube for so-called magicians treating kids like idiots, but that's not kid show magic; that's just condescending. The exception is , where he truly interacts and performs great magic for them, but there's not much published material.

Hope this helps! Cheers,

I like that saying about it not being magic, but paternalism. You're absolutely right.

Kids' magic needs to be very visual; you'll want to use large, colorful, easy-to-understand, and eye-catching props. The storytelling or patter is super important because otherwise, kids get distracted easily, and you definitely don't want that.

You can learn a ton of kids' magic on YouTube, for example, with balloons, which is fantastic, and with many other materials.

You can also get started with books or find inspiration from kids' magic routines you come across.

Or you can buy effects at a magic shop, such as a change bag for a silk routine, a coloring book effect, or similar effects that perform well.

Children's magic is based on one principle:

Ask any child, of any age, anywhere in the world: "What's the most fun?"

And EVERYONE will tell you: "Playing!"

You can do any magic trick with a child, and if you do it playfully, they'll have a blast.

For example: Six-year-olds aren't familiar with playing cards. Have them "choose" a card. A blank one comes up. You tell them, "No, we need one with pictures!" They choose another card, and it's blank again. "Of course, since you don't know the cards, that's why they're all blank!" Draw a picture on the card. For example, the fifteen of puppies. You can then do an Ambitious Card routine, and they'll have a blast laughing.

With kids, you just have to play, play, and play. Learn to play like a child, and you'll perform great children's magic.
