I think we all eventually get hooked because, over time, we realize the beauty and fulfillment this art brings. No matter how you use it, it ultimately becomes a significant part of your life.
Personally, I'm a musician, and I can tell you that all performing arts aren't that different in this regard. Once you discover an art form and feel that desire to dedicate your time to it, you just can't help but fall completely in love.
Thanks for sharing this; I think it's an interesting topic we could really dive deep into. It's funny, something similar happens with stand-up comedy... in many cases, stand-up comedians perform to get attention from others due to a lack of attention at home, though, obviously, there are exceptions. Unfortunately, I come from a dysfunctional family, and coincidentally, I love stand-up and magic, HAHAHAHAHA. It seems all the threads connect, haha. Anyway, I think we should really consider why we love magic... performing in general.
I believe there are as many reasons to practice magic as there are magicians. Some do it for work, others for passion, necessity, to pick up dates, or simply to be better than everyone else. Everyone has their own reasons.
The thing is, performing arts easily reveal a person's true character. If you pay a little attention, you can perfectly tell who's doing magic just to look cool versus who genuinely loves it. You can even spot those who enjoy deceiving people versus those who simply want others to have a good time.
Ultimately, I don't think there's one single answer. Like most things, humility is key, and you should never stop learning from everyone. Even if you're performing at The Magic Castle.
