I think I recall there was another thread on this topic, but essentially, you always need an 'out.' Have a follow-up trick ready to go and bail yourself out, taking advantage of the fact that the audience doesn't know what you were supposed to do. You can either pretend it was a mistake (even if it was a real one, haha) or just act like you haven't finished the effect yet.
