What to Do When Asked to Repeat a Pre-Set Trick?

I haven't been into magic for very long, but I've performed some tricks that require a setup—for example, mathematical ones or "luck" effects where the cards are separated by color or need an exact position or stack, etc.

The thing is, it's happened to me several times that I've performed a pre-set trick, and then they've asked me to repeat it, and I just draw a blank. For instance, with a trick like the self-tying shoelaces, it has a significant pre-show setup, so it can't be repeated. So, what can I do to avoid sounding rude and still gracefully handle the situation?

Hey there. The book recommended here might help clear up that concern and any others you might have:

For now, I'd say you need to have something up your sleeve: a good impromptu effect (one that requires no prior setup). Then, when they ask you to repeat a trick that requires prior setup (something you can't really do right in front of the spectator), you can say something like, "How about I show you something even better?" or "Let's try something more challenging"… something along those lines.

As for the shoelace trick, I'd use that as an icebreaker, perhaps with a comedic touch like, "I'm too lazy to bend down…" (or something similar). But then you need to follow up with your main event.

Best,

Hey there! One of the cardinal rules in magic is never repeat an effect, so you've got a quick out right there. If they push it, you can tell them: 'Yeah, that was pretty cool, but let me show you another one I really like.' That'll get their attention somewhere else, and you're good to go.
