On Inventing Magic

I was hoping someone could help me out with this, because I often run into people who

already know the tricks.

Hey there!

First off, let me tell you (and this is just how I see it, not a lesson or anything, just my personal opinion) that there's a difference between doing tricks and performing magic. 🤫

It's all about how you present each thing. 😅

I do "tricks" for family and close friends.

A lot of times it's to practice them, and most of the time, after the trick, I usually reveal it.

That's how "awesome" (sarcasm) I am to all my close ones, the trick spoiler. 🤣

But that's because it's almost impossible to perform magic for people who knew you before you were a magician (or at least, that's my experience), and right off the bat, I lower their expectations by telling them I'm going to do a trick, not magic, and that I'll tell them how it's done afterward. 😈

This way, I completely nullify their desire to "catch me or mess with me," and I can practice more calmly because they relax until the end and are genuinely surprised.

I've also found that for most people (my mom, my brother, my daughter, and many friends), a week later, I do the same "trick" for them, and they're surprised again! Honestly, a lot of times they don't even remember the revelation.

I perform "magic" for those who know little to nothing about me.

It's easier for me to switch into the role of a magician.

I bring this up in case your problem is that you're doing the same tricks for the same people, especially if they're acquaintances.

It's clear that, for example, doing a Double Lift 20 times for the same person is suicide. We should always alternate different techniques for the same purposes to effectively conceal the secret.

Getting to the point.

Your question is about how to invent magic?

Well, that's the big dilemma for all of us.

You can take known effects and combine them into a logical routine with a story.

You can also invent your own effects based on techniques you already know.

Ultimately, you're either adapting what's out there or creating something new.

(If you're not doing it already, I suggest you start organizing the effects you know by type to make it easier to create routines.)

If you're referring to inventing gimmick-style tricks/props, I think they're going to release a course on that here.

One thing I can tell you, the more gimmicks you know, the more ingenious your mind becomes, and the easier it is to develop your own gimmicks.

I don't know if my answer has helped you at all; it's more of a general guide since your question is very broad. 😊

I could be talking for hours and hours, days and days, but without something more specific, it's going to be difficult.

If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask.

All the best!

Hello there, the whole creativity thing is pretty complex.

First off, some people are super creative, and others, well, not so much. But whenever I chat about this with really creative magicians, the first thing they always suggest is to read and watch tons of magic.

First, seeing what other folks are doing really sparks your imagination and shows you the vast possibilities. And second, the more techniques you know, the better you can bring your ideas to life (plus, mastering more moves often helps you invent new ones).

Also, read fiction, appreciate painters and illustrators, watch movies... Many magicians, like Tamariz or Gea, have drawn inspiration from people such as Borges or Magritte. Inspiration might strike you while watching a movie one day, but you have to be open and ready for that idea to hit.

For example, I was really motivated by some weekly challenges Luis Olmedo used to post on his Twitch channel. He suggested, for instance, that for the next week, we present a Matrix effect or a four-card change. You could use someone else's routine, but I took it as a creative challenge and pushed myself to come up with an original effect. It helped me immensely, and I ended up creating some of my favorite effects.

And lastly, it really comes down to what you want to accomplish as a magician. If you feel that urge to create, you'll eventually do it, even if it's just pure stubbornness. As Picasso said, inspiration has to find you working.

What people typically expect is for a magician to guess a card, make a coin vanish, have a prediction come true, or make an object travel from one place to another — those are your typical examples.

The real challenge, though, is... how are you going to surprise people when they already know that if you pull out a deck of cards, it's to guess someone's chosen card?

What can you do differently to turn the expected into the unexpected?

In fact, you could even start ironically, saying as you bring out the deck...

—You know how when a magician pulls out a deck, it's usually to guess the card you're going to pick, right? But this time, we're going to do things a little differently...

And then you guess it with the Espejo Mágico or the WOW 3.0... for example.
