Mentalism

I just finished watching "The Mentalist" series, and I absolutely loved how Patrick Jane makes it seem like he can read people's minds. I did a little research and saw that Luke Jermay helped the actor build his mentalist character. I was wondering if there's a book, course, or any trick that achieves a similar effect—one that creates the impression I can truly read a spectator's mind. I've been experimenting with a trick where I ask them to place three random cards on the table and pick one, and by watching their face, I can guess which card they chose. I've pulled it off several times, but I want to perfect the technique, so I'm asking if anyone can help me out.
