I hate to be that guy, but I think you're confusing "effect" with "routine" or "trick." Magical terminology is important so we can all speak the same language.

To elaborate:

  • Effect is the impossible phenomenon that happens during a magic performance. Dariel Fitzkee identified 20 effects in 1944, a classification still relevant today: transposition, levitation, suspension, skill, sympathy, restoration, etc.
  • Trick is how the effect is presented, its outward manifestation, the individual miracle: The Indian Water, The Impossible Voyage, Torn and Restored Card, The Professor's Nightmare, etc.
  • Technique is how the effect that defines the trick is accomplished. To put it another way, the same trick can employ different techniques, and a single trick can incorporate multiple effects.

You're a real purist! 🤣

But you're right... everything by its proper name. 😉

Even though we know that 'effect' was used when they really meant 'trick'.

@DeZeta You're right, that's all very true. I'll see if it lets me edit it from my phone. Once I've changed it, would you be up for covering it? 😉
