Well, if you use an Elmsley count to show four cards when you actually have five, you can apply that same principle to any number of cards you want.
Sometimes I use a Hamman count where I appear to count seven cards but actually have nine in hand. Only five of those are ever shown; the other four cards are never seen.

There's a solution for this, but it requires a bit more technique.
