Shuttle Pass: The Practical Change

JJoseIntermediate1m7

A substitution integrated into the hand-to-hand transfer

José Arcario presents the Shuttle Pass with a coin and a die: an object is shown, the transfer between the hands takes place, and the other is revealed. The instructor also calls it the practical change and finger palm change, names that set the technique before explaining how it works.

The handling and continuity

The explanation focuses on coordinating the hand that appears to give the object and the one that appears to receive it. You will work on retention, the closing of the receiving hand, and the final reveal, maintaining a simple sequence that you can repeat while practicing. The finger palm is the basis for handling both objects.

In addition to showing the change, José insists that passing an object to the other hand needs a reason. His example is once again rolling up your sleeves: a routine action that allows the movement to continue and prevents the transfer from feeling isolated from the rest of the presentation. The usefulness of the technique lies as much in the substitution as in that continuity.

Props and preparation

You will need a coin and a die that you can comfortably conceal in your fingers. It is advisable to know the finger palm and rehearse the movement with both hands so that the apparent delivery and reception maintain a coherent rhythm. The video offers the demonstration and explanation of this specific change, with the goal of allowing you to incorporate it into your own small object routines.
