Face Flap: Construction with Two Court Cards

JJulioAdvanced7m10

Julio Montoro teaches how to build a Face Flap that changes the identity of a court card. The example uses a Queen of Hearts and a King of Spades, along with a backing card.

Court Cards and Cutting Guide

The version taught uses two court cards to help disguise the flap's line. Montoro mentions there is another solution he doesn't explain here; the assembly developed in this video retains the condition of working with court cards.

To make the cuts, he uses a WonderCutter or a guide he calls El Engendro. The explanation shows this aid to center the cut; it does not demonstrate substituting it with any other tool. If you need a guide, you can check options at your favorite magic shop.

Cutting and Assembly

The tutorial works on partially cutting the cards and preserving the layer that allows movement. Afterward, the placement of double-sided tape and the joining of the pieces are explained.

The tutorial pays attention to framing: how to hold the assembly and how to align the parts before fixing them onto the backing card.

Thread and Operation

The construction continues with punching holes, threading the elastic thread, and knotting. Montoro applies the thread work to the mechanism and finishes by showing the first opening gradually.

At the end, the change between the court cards is tested. The content covers the fabrication of this Face Flap, not a complete performance routine using it.

You will need two court cards, a backing card, the cutting guide used, a craft knife, double-sided tape, an awl, elastic thread, and a needle. Being familiar with layer cutting and knotting makes it easier to follow the assembly. The reliance on the guide is explicit; buying a pre-made Face Flap is not required.
